A heartbreaking incident occurred recently in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where over 240 passengers lost their lives, and only one fortunate passenger survived. In response to this devastating plane crash, the authorities initiated a DNA sampling project within three days, around June 15, 2025, to help identify the victims.
Why DNA Sampling Was Necessary
The crash was extremely violent, causing severe damage to both the aircraft and the surroundings. Due to the intensity of the destruction, traditional identification methods such as visual confirmation, dental records, or medical records were not feasible. Therefore, DNA testing became the only reliable method for confirming the identities of the deceased.
Setup of DNA Collection Facility
A dedicated DNA collection facility was set up at Kasoti Bhavan in B.J. Medical College, Ahmedabad. Families of the victims—especially parents and children—were requested to provide blood samples to assist in the identification process.
Outcomes of the DNA Sampling Initiative
- By June 16, 2025: DNA matches were completed for 87 victims, and 47 bodies were handed over to their families.
- By June 17, 2025: The number of collected DNA samples reached 119, and 76 bodies were returned to their loved ones.
- As of June 19, 2025: Authorities had completed 211 DNA matches, and 189 bodies had been released to their relatives.
